It: Welcome to Derry Releases Episode Two Early on HBO Max

Fans are eagerly awaiting for the Stephen King adaptation Welcome to Derry, that's been earning acclaim and drawing from references from other Stephen King works. Just one day after launch, HBO has revealed that the second installment will arrive early, released fittingly for October 31st.

Premiere Shift Details

Starting on Halloween night at midnight PT, episode two of It: Welcome to Derry will make its debut on the streaming service, prior to its traditional TV airing. Future chapters of the eight-episode season will premiere on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max, culminating in the season finale on December 14th.

Storyline Summary

Based in the world of King's It, It: Welcome to Derry draws from King’s iconic novel while building upon the setting realized by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. The first It movie focused on kids and teens battling unimaginable horrors, so it’s fitting that the series follows in those footsteps. Nevertheless, the debut of the streaming show demonstrates it aimed to increase the tension, delivering even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and setting a brutal tone for the upcoming episodes.

Setting and Themes

Set in 1962, the series presents a new generation of parents and youngsters living in a seemingly idyllic town masking a sinister core. This place functions through a cruel, recurring cycle—one marked by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a terrifying being returns each 27-year cycle. Even though the series might appear like it skews too close to the movies at first, what differentiates the streaming show is its parallel storytelling—told from the viewpoints of young and old simultaneously. Children stay especially susceptible to It's terror, but the adults don't escape facing their personal demons stemming from the town's ingrained prejudice and hidden paranormal elements.

The series debuts on Halloween at 12 a.m. Pacific Time.
