The English golfer Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Climax

This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
