During the bulk of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event went deeper than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about his research, the container would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to become stronger.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
