The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team
The English team has chosen a 12-man selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.
In those matches, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a team relying on fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they come out and excel out here.”
