This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
